The Perfect Day Itinerary for La Jolla, California

La Jolla, California is one of San Diego’s true gems—a coastal paradise with something for everyone. Whether you’re in the mood for a scenic hike, a relaxing day at some of the most stunning beaches in the country, or you’re just looking to try something new and explore a vibrant seaside town, this place has it all. I’ve put together the perfect day itinerary to help you make the most of your visit to La Jolla.

8am Hike @ Torrey Pines or Blacks Beach Trail

Torrey Pines is a fantastic hike in La Jolla, and it’s definitely the most popular. I recomend getting their early to enjoy less crowd. The views are stunning. And there are trails for everyone. There’s also free parking before the enterence if you want to avoid the park enterence fee. The parking is on the right of the road right before it. You can’t miss it.

Blacks Beach Trail is another great hike in La Jolla, Torrey Pines is a little bit longer duration 2hr while Blacks Beach is about an hour. Both great options in the area.

10:00 Breakfast @ Blue Whale Cafe

Blue Whale Cafe is by far our favorite when it comes to delicious, fresh and healthy breakfast / lunch food, located right near the La Jolla Shores. This Place is a 100/10 in our books.

11:15 Beach Day & Activities @ La Jolla Shores

If you’re in the mood for adventure, La Jolla Shores is packed with options. You can rent a surfboard or book a quick lesson if you’re just starting out, or grab a kayak and paddle out past the cove. Snorkeling with the leopard sharks is a must if you’re here in late summer—either on your own or through a guided tour. There’s also a mellow hike nearby at the La Jolla Shores coastal trail with awesome ocean views. Or honestly, if you’re just looking to chill, the beach itself is beautiful. Pro tip: if the sand is packed, head to the far left side in front of the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club—there’s usually open space there and it’s kind of a local secret. Whether you’re out in the water or just soaking up the sun, it’s one of those spots that makes you want to stay all day.

2:00 Hermosa Surf Shop + Wind and Sea Beach

Start your morning at Hermosa Surf Shop—grab a smoothie, açaí bowl, or coffee and snap some pics in their super cute, beachy setup. Then head down to Windansea Beach for a chill day by the water, tide pool exploring, or catching a classic San Diego sunset. 🌴 🌊 📸

5:00 UTC Mall (outdoor mall) for Shopping and Dinner

UTC Mall is one of San Diego’s top spots for shopping and dining, all set in a beautiful outdoor space lined with palm trees and fountains. You’ll find high-end stores like Tiffany & Co., Lululemon, and Nordstrom, along with top-rated restaurants like Din Tai Fung, Javier’s, and Raised by Wolves. Whether you’re here to shop, grab dinner, or just stroll around, UTC delivers a luxury vibe without feeling stuffy.

7:30-8:00 Sunset Cliffs

From 7:30 to 8:00 pm at Sunset Cliffs in Point Loma, the show begins as golden light bathes the rugged sandstone cliffs and rhythmic waves crash below. A gentle stroll along the 1.5‑mile bluff trail reveals hidden sea caves, natural arches, and tucked‑away tide‑pools—each viewpoint more stunning than the last . As the sun dips toward the Pacific, the sky transforms in real time—rich hues of orange, pink, and purple paint the ocean’s horizon . It’s a local favorite because it feels wild yet welcoming—bring a light jacket, find a quiet spot, and stay just long enough to catch the fading twilight magic.

Address: 4515 Ladera St, San Diego, CA 92107 (Sunset Cliffs Natural Park)

(Optional parking is available off Lomaland Dr or near the corner of Ladera & Cornish, but go early—this place fills fast!)
